Welcome to everyone who is here to be a "Curved Line Thinker". Moms and Dads please feel free to ask us to create a story featuring "Herbie and Nate" to help you at home with any "Straight Line Thinking" your child with autism may have problems with. It may help and I love writing them. Just leave a note here as to what situations your child has problems trying something new in.

SHORT STORY: Head of the Class
.by Curvy Herbie and Straight Nate on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at 3:11am.
    Head Of The Class

Hi everyone, this is Straight Nate. Today when I went to math class I noticed something was different. I always sit at the front of the class. My desk is lined up with the letter N for my name on the alphabet line on top of the chalkboard. But today, my desk was missing. In fact about two other desks were missing and in their place was a little boy my age in a wheelchair.

“Hi, my name is Marvin”, the little boy said as he put out his hand to shake mine. “Hi, I’m Nate” I said, “but where is my desk?” “Oh, it’s because of my wheelchair”, Marvin said. “It takes up a little extra room and I have to sit up front because it’s hard for me to wheel up and down the aisles between the desks. That’s why the teacher put me here. I hope you don’t mind.”

My friend Curvy Herbie was right behind me and he said hi to Marvin too. “Herbie…what am I going to do?” I asked, “My desk has been moved over and now I’m under the letter ‘L’ and not the letter ‘N’.”

Herbie had an idea. “Come with me Nate and I’ll show you something really cool.” We walked to the back of the class where Herbie always sits.

“I like to sit back here because you can see the back of everyone’s head”, Herbie explained. “Not only can you see the back of their heads, he chuckled, but you can see how messed up everyone’s hair is.” “See Alicia’s ponytail bows? Look, they are all crooked” and he pointed to the back of Alicia’s head. “And look at Terry’s hair, it looks like a snake the way it curves. I like sitting back here and trying to find new designs in everyone’s hair each day by using my curved line thinking. Come on Nate, sit back here with me today and we will compare notes after the class is over.”

I sat down next to Herbie and I saw that Suzy’s curly hair looked just like my mom’s dust mom… that was funny. I say that Brian’s buzz cut looked like the lawn after my dad mows it. By being a curved line thinker I found out that sitting in the back of the class can be fun too!

When it was time to go back to homeroom, I noticed that Marvin was looking back at me. As I passed by him he touched my arm and said “Hey Nate, since you were the first person to be nice to me in my new class I would like it fi you would sit up here next to me right under the letter “L”. When I look at it I think of the word “lonely” and if you were here with me I wouldn’t be lonely for sure.”

“Ok, I said. Tomorrow I will give it a try.”

So today I used my curved line thinking to see a different view of the class and the people I go to school with and I also made a new friend.
